I just started my new sketchbook. This one made with Arches 140lb cold press paper that I bought from a garage sale.
This might take some adjustment. My thought was to use "good paper" in the hopes of getting better results with my watercolors. "Good" is a relative term. I am sure there are a lot of peopke who would love to have this book with the "good" paper. Since i LOVE to sketch with my fountain pens, my good paper for me would be less textured.
I recently ordered sheets of Stillman & Birn Delta series ivory WC paper. It is 180lb and cold press but has (at least from the sample) a lot less texture.
So we'll see when that comes in if I will continue using this book for my everyday book and modify my approach until it is complete. Or if I use it for WC lessons I am going to be taking and bind up a new one.
Here are the first few pages from the weekend as well as a cropped photo of the book.

I unintentionally sketched things to scale
The last few days i decided to sketch everyday objects that were in my arms reach. It is really cold out (2 degrees) so i am staying indoors till the weather breaks.
The other night, itching to sketch i grabbed the brass tacks my mother in-law gave me for my birthday and sketched away. The next day at work again needing to sketch again i decided to sketch my fountain pens. Placed them on the desk and drew away.
Late in the day i showed a co-worker and had the thought that they might be close in size to the actual pens. So when i get home i opened the book tossed the pens down and ha!!!! all but the one i knew was wonky was nearly the exact size.
That made me run and grab the tacks and check those and again..... i drew them almost to scale
.
I thought is was kind of crazy and was super excited. So much so i had trouble concentrating on last nights sketch. But coworker said it made
perfect sense since i design and draft objects, building etc. for a
living. I was thinking that letting my hand follow my eye and not do what my brain says might be a reason also/
So there's my random tale about sketching to scale. Sketches and photo comparisons below. :)

January 18 in Canandaigua
The Rochester Sketch meet up group mt down in Canandaigua Saturday. Well three of us did and had a great time. Started in the coffee shop of an antique store then had lunch and sketched in the Mexican
restaurant up the street then stopped at one more antique store, this time just to browse. What a great way to spend the day.

busy in the new year
Another new year and another attempt at sketching everyday.... here is my start.
This one from a meeting on Thursday
and the other two at home. My sketches
from Wednesday aren't post worthy but i was definitely spending time
experimenting and pushing my comfort boundary.
